about
This was written in character to celebrate Ancestor's Day in the fantasy LARP Kishar (kisharlarp.org).
lyrics
We choose our pathways through this life, but others paved our way.
We stop to look back and give thanks on ancestors' day.
Chorus:
Remember those who walked before
And left a way behind
In the hope that we who follow
May go farther in our time
They pushed on through their hardships
Confronting every fear,
So raise a toast to those who carved
The paths that brought us here
I sing thanks to the Shar'vin, a folk of peculiar make.
Some times I found the path they laid quite narrow, dull and straight.
But it led me safely to a crossing, where I chose my way,
And they may have frowned a bit, but did not try to make me stay.
I thank the Etherialists who delved in shadows black.
Who dared to cross a threshold only hoping they'd get back
Your studies opened up a world beyond the one we see
And lit a spark of wonder that still burns in folks like me
I honor artists of all crafts, and thank each one who strives
To make works that reveal to us the truths about our lives
Though some may sniff, and claim to value ‘substance over style’
I know it's art that truly makes our journeys worth the while
My thanks to the adventurers who boldly chart the course;
who faced each hazard, great or small with overwhelming force.
Some of them fought for justice, and others just for gold,
but every one deserves to know their stories still are told.
After today we look ahead and chart the paths we'll lay,
to make the next step easier for those who pass this way.
I hope that they get farther than we've yet dared to dream,
and that long after we are gone they'll not forget to sing:
